A Quiet Ambition
Anita attended school every day for six consecutive years without a single absence — a record her class teacher still mentions with pride. Her ambition to become a nurse took shape when a community health worker visited the school and spoke about the difference one trained caregiver could make in an under-resourced ward.
Nursing School on a Scholarship
With her school coordinator's help, Anita applied for the Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship for Social Inclusion, which covered three years of a General Nursing and Midwifery diploma at a Pune college. She had never lived away from home before, but she completed the diploma with a first-class result.
At the Hospital
Anita was posted to Sassoon General Hospital's paediatric ward in 2021. She describes the work as a continuation of what Sumati Balwan gave her: caring for children who have very little. In 2023, she was recognised as one of the ward's outstanding nurses by the hospital administration.
