Learning a Skill
Meena completed 8th grade at Sumati Balwan and chose vocational training over mainstream secondary school. The school supported her decision and connected her with a certified beautician course run by a women's self-help group in the neighbourhood. She completed the course in six months and, in her own words, finally felt ready for the world.
Working and Saving
Meena worked as an assistant at a salon in Kothrud for three years, learning every aspect of running a small business — not just the craft, but the bookkeeping, supplier relationships, and customer care. She saved methodically, living frugally and resisting every pressure to spend.
Her Own Salon
Where She Is Today
Meena opened her salon in Hadapsar in 2020 with a small microfinance loan. She now employs two full-time stylists and runs a monthly training workshop for young women from low-income backgrounds, offering them the same entry point she once received. She stays in close contact with Sumati Balwan and has offered to run skill sessions for senior students whenever the school needs her.
